Mitt Romney was in Bettendorf today to open a new campaign office. The headquarters was jammed solid with campaign supporters, the press and the curious looking for some good pizza and cookies.
The crowd arrived early long before the doors were scheduled to open. We arrived 30 minutes early before the doors were supposed to open and found the rooms packed and could barely squeeze in (it was cold and I guess they had to let the early crowd in) and find a place to stand. Luckily, Mitt Romney also arrived early and gave a great speech. Romney again laid out his claim to the mantle of Ronald Reagan with his boundless optimism of the future of the United States. Romney pointed out how America has faced many problems in the past and overcome them and how the United States will continue to overcome all obstacles. Romney then criticized the past records of Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani on illegal immigration pointing out Huckabee favored in-state college tuition for illegals in Arkansas and Giuliani's sanctuary city status for illegals. Romney then laid out his plan for handling illegal immigration: "take away the magnet"; remove the financial incentives for illegal aliens to enter this country and illegal immigration will dwindle to a trickle. Romney also pointed out Huckabee's record on taxes and spending as Governor of Arkansas and compared it to his record as Governor of Massachusetts. Romney also brought up the Huckabee record on pardons of criminals in Arkansas (this is developing into a big story which may derail the Huckabee campaign). Romney spoke about defeating Jihadism and energy independence and promised progress on nuclear energy as well as renewable energy. Finally, Romney talked about John Edwards and his theme of "Two Americas" and said "No, there is but ONE AMERICA". Romney then took several questions from the audience and gave each one a detailed answer. Then Romney shook hands throughout the room, posing for many pictures, before heading to a back room for an interview with the local and national media.
Mitt Romney wowed this crowd as he has so many others with his great speaking style, his energy, his good looks, his family background, his political background, his knowledge of the issues, his position on those issues, the decency which he radiates and especially his infectious optimism. I would urge every voter to consider Mitt Romney.

Although I am a Democrat, I like Romney's views. But unfortunately I don't think the country would elect a Mormon [SAD]. There are still far too many ignorant idiots who think that we are a cult and we believe in polygamy (which was outlawed by the Church in 1800s). [GLARE]

Let us hope our country has evolved out of tribalism and is ready to vote for any candidate who reflects our values and demonstrates ability. No one should vote for or against Romney because he is a Mormon. Nor should being black or female cause anyone to vote for or against Obama or Clinton.

I agree with you that no one SHOULD base their votes on such insignificant criteria, but the reality is that people do all the time! I consider myself a democrat, but have voted for many republicans in my lifetime, and will continue to do so if I feel that a republican is the best candidate for the position. And I would not vote for Mitt simply because we are both Mormon, nor would I vote for Hillary simply because we are both women. But I hear from people frequently who seem to have little knowledge of the politician's stands on the issues, voting for someone simply because "he's so handsome" or "he comes from my state" etc. I make my next statement at the risk of upsetting some people, but it might be better if they didn't vote at all, if they are not going to cast their votes based on a candidate's qualifications, beliefs, values, etc. [HUH]
